The accidental discovery of the Megatherium mastodon or giant ground sloth and subsequent studies placed the existence of this megafauna between (50,000 – 20,000 BP).

Following this discovery, the "Paleontological Park" was formed, in order to preserve the habitat of this find.

The megatherium (which could weigh up to 5 tons and measure 4 to 6 meters) along with the mastodon are the largest animals of the so-called "megafauna"; other examples are: the sabre-toothed tiger and the giant armadillo.

Its head was small, its neck short, its body very thick and with claws. It also had very strong hind limbs, so it is believed that it could stand on two legs to reach fruit from trees. It is thought that it used its claws either to reach branches or to scratch the ground in search of bulbs.

It is believed that its extinction was due to strong climatic changes that occurred at the end of the Pleistocene in addition to the pressure exerted by nomadic groups of hunters.

The findings place it at an age of 17,000 years BP.
