Between September 30 and October 3, peasants, fishermen, educators and rural workers will meet at the Peasant Summits for Agroecology and Food Sovereignty in Santa Elena, Manabí, Los Ríos and El Oro, to build their own agenda for the transformation of the Ecuadorian countryside.
Although the constitutional framework creates the conditions for the construction of an agrarian model based on agroecology and food sovereignty and with peasant participation, the Peasant Summits arise in the face of the unquestionable agrarian debt and the advance of a set of policies that are detrimental to food sovereignty and the possibility of achieving social justice in the countryside.
The presence of GMOs in the countryside, the spraying of agro-toxics, the lack of policies to promote agroecology, the concentration of water and land, the impossibility of accessing fair trade, the lack of credit for small farmers... are part of the universe of problems to which the "agrarian revolution" has not provided an answer. On the contrary, agrarian legislation and policies such as the FTA with the European Union strengthen agribusiness and the imposition of a new productive matrix from above, which progressively seeks to destroy peasant production.
Therefore, the peasants, farmers, fishermen, educators and rural workers, with our own voice, will put forward proposals, without intermediaries, based on our experiences, knowledge and problems, to demand what is due to us by law, but also to work together to build alternative solutions from our organizations.
The Peasant Summits for Agroecology and Food Sovereignty are part of the construction of the Agrarian Summit where we will come together with rural organizations from all over the country for a true agrarian debate that builds food sovereignty.
