A long, long, long time ago, the Earth, which is the planet where we live, had beings called Trees.
– Trees? – I asked him, laughing a little because the name sounded funny to me, but he said very seriously – Yes, trees. This story is true, so listen carefully. At that moment I began to concentrate on his words.
– Trees were living beings that did not speak. They gave us shade so that we would not be hot or sunburned, they also produced oxygen so that we could breathe and live healthy, and their branches gave us fruit and they gave it to us for free! Their green color decorated our streets and our parks.
When my grandfather had been telling me the story for a while, I asked him: – And why did those beings leave, grandpa? And he answered me: – Well, they left because for a long, long time we cut them up to make paper, we burned down the house where they lived, which was called the forest, to build shopping centres and buildings, and when there were very few of them left and they realised that even though they gave us many gifts we didn’t want them, they decided to disappear.
When he told me all this, I was left with my eyes wide open, staring at him, since all the gifts that my grandfather said those beings called trees gave us are now very expensive and there are very few of them.
For example, oxygen is produced by a machine that we have to carry around with us all the time and it smells really bad; there is no need for shade because the sun has been out for some time now, it is always covered by dirty, grey clouds that never make it rain; and you can only eat fruit once a year because there is very little of it and Dad says it is very expensive. The parks are only made of dirt and small plants that sting and prick a lot if you touch them. Then, very sadly, I asked my grandfather: – Will the trees ever come back?
And he answered me:
– They are waiting for us humans to stop being so selfish and realize that everything that nature gives us can run out and we must show it that we are grateful whenever we can, trying not to waste the resources we have left, such as water, because if it gets angry with us, what we have left today could also go with them, never to return.
And I only had one more question to ask my grandfather when he finished the sad story he had just told me:
– Grandpa, in the old days we humans were very stupid, weren’t we?
And he started laughing.
