What to do before a tsunami?
Here are some ideas for preparing for coastal areas with the possibility of suffering a tsunami.
- Identify a high place and several evacuation routes (on foot and by car).
- If you live on the coast, find out how high above sea level and how far from the coast your home is. Evacuation can be based on these parameters.
- An earthquake, a loud underground noise, or a rapid rise or fall of the tide are all signs that a tsunami may be approaching.
- The whole family should know what to do, how to cut off the gas, electricity and water supply, and the emergency telephone numbers.
- Establish a meeting point in case the family is scattered.
- Have your emergency kit handy.
- Inform your relatives in other locations where you and your family will be traveling, so they know how to locate you after the event.
- Identify media outlets that provide information about these events.
- Follow the recommendations of relief agencies, do not spread information without technical criteria or rumours.
- Participate in community disaster preparedness training.
