In recent weeks, the Ecuadorian government has made two announcements that threaten to destroy the last areas of the planet's most biodiverse zone, located in the Ecuadorian Amazon.<\/span><\/span>

These areas include:<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
1. Yasun\u00ed National Park (in the province of Orellana), where it was announced days ago that the company Petroamazonas (which recently announced its merger with the environmentally super-inefficient Petroecuador) will take charge of exploiting block 31 in the short term, of 200,000 hectares, of which 80% is within the Reserved Area and is located less than 100 kilometers from the ITT Yasun\u00ed project, for which the Ecuadorian government is asking the global community for hundreds of millions of dollars in order not to exploit it.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
2. More than 2.5 million hectares of the last virgin forest outside of reserved areas in Ecuador are currently being tendered (Pastaza and Morona Santiago provinces). This area, together with the Yasun\u00ed National Park, is part of the area of greatest biodiversity on the planet. It is of great importance for mammals, reptiles, plants and insects; in addition, it is an area that has more than 90% of its original Amazonian forest cover.<\/span>

ON THE OCCASION OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF EXPLOITING OIL IN THE YASUNI NATIONAL PARK AND OF EXPANDING THE OIL FRONTIER TO OTHER AREAS OF THE ZONE WITH THE GREATEST BIODIVERSITY IN THE WORLD<\/div>\n
WE THE UNDERSIGNED:<\/div>\n
CONSIDERING<\/div>\n
1. That we are committed to the initiative of not exploiting crude oil in Yasun\u00ed.
2. That the Yasun\u00ed ITT proposal expressly states: "The protection of uninterrupted indigenous territories is also included."
3. That the area of the tenders that your government is currently promoting are uninterrupted indigenous territories.
4. It has been proven (with the large number of environmental and social problems) that there is no oil industry that guarantees not to have a huge impact on these areas.
5. That the government you preside over promotes the campaign "Ecuador, love life"
6. We are determined to push our leaders to truly enter a transitional phase away from fossil fuels and to support it from our individual and collective spaces.
7. We know that according to the Ecuadorian Constitution, oil should not be exploited in protected areas and that the Rights of Nature and sumak kawsay (good living) are also recognized.
8 We consider that the great merit of the Yasun\u00ed-ITT Initiative is to have put on the international stage for the first time the real possibility of not exploiting oil, overcoming, in addition, the carbon market discourses that dominate the discussion on climate change.
9. That despite all the information circulating internationally about this cutting-edge initiative for the protection of life on the planet, the start of operations of block 31 and the tenders currently open can be read as contradictions and confusions that inhibit many people, groups and governments from being part of it.<\/div>\n
WE REQUEST:<\/div>\n
1. Conduct a socio-environmental audit of the ENTIRE Yasun\u00ed National Park to ensure its integrity.
2. Suspend the start of extractive activities in block 31, located in the Park.
3. Suspend the current bidding for oil blocks in the provinces of Morona Santiago and Pastaza, and incorporate these areas into the ITT project to strengthen it and make it larger.
4. Take urgent measures to demonstrate the Ecuadorian government's real will to save the Yasun\u00ed and its people and to advance the post-oil transition. These actions should include transparency in the 2012 budget to reduce excessive spending on items that could be allocated to social issues, and thus avoid having to continue expanding the oil frontier in order to cover these expenses.
5. Clarify internationally and categorically the commitment to be consistent with the campaign that the Ecuadorian government and people promote: Ecuador, love life.
6. Coordinate with the new Peruvian government to study the possibility of incorporating the neighboring fields on the Peruvian side, in order to achieve the objective of numeral 2.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
