The Mayor of Quito together with his Councillors recently approved a BULLFIGHTING ORDINANCE that has been rejected by broad sectors of society, especially by animal rights activists and nature lovers, as it is considered illegal. The Ordinance was approved with 13 votes in favour and 2 against, violating - according to publications on social networks - "in a shameless way the popular will, mocking not only the citizens of Quito but of the entire country and completely trampling on our CONSTITUTION." The disgust has reached such a point that even the imprisonment of these officials is requested.<\/span><\/div>\n

These are some of the most controversial articles on the subject: (in italics are the comments of the researcher of the article).<\/span><\/div>\n

Art. IV. 305.- In the event that it has not been possible to return the bull to the corrals, due to its degree of USELESSNESS OR DISABILITY, after the steers have left, the President will authorize its SLAUGHTER in the ring by the puntillero; and, if this is not possible, by the torero on duty. The bulls that are returned to the corrals in accordance with the provisions of the previous paragraphs, WILL NECESSARILY BE STUNNED there.<\/span><\/div>\n

Art. IV. 196.- Declaration.- Bullfighting is recognized as an ANCESTRAL TRADITION OF THE PEOPLE OF QUITO, IT BEING THE DUTY OF THE MUNICIPALITY TO PROMOTE AND DISSEMINATE THEM AS CULTURAL HERITAGE AND INDEPENDENT ELEMENTS OF THE HISTORICAL IDENTITY OF QUITO.<\/span><\/div>\n

Art. IV. 289.- The cattle will receive the number of PUYASOS they need according to their characteristics.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
A bull can lose two or more litres of blood during the picador or PUYASO operation, which means around 10% of the total blood it has (about 19 litres). A person who loses a proportional amount of blood is left prostrate. The PUYASO or humiliation injures the muscles and ligaments that hold the head of the BULL. With these muscles destroyed, the animal does not just humiliate itself, it cannot lift its head, which facilitates the later display of the matador. The bull, at that moment, has already been intentionally disabled and ready for the "shameless" sacrifice -according to the opposition groups- sponsored by the Mayor and his Councillors.<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

Art. IV. 208.- First-category permanent positions will have the following services and facilities:<\/span><\/div>\n

g) A ship intended for the SLAUGHTERING of cattle.<\/span><\/div>\n

Art. IV. 312.- Of the butchering area.- The first category bullrings of the Metropolitan District must have a butchering area for slaughter.<\/span><\/div>\n

To whom do they intend to sell this meat damaged by toxins, drugs and substances dangerous to health? <\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Those who form these networks claim to be the \u201cChildren who have already grown up\u201d and who are not willing to tolerate these \u201cunderhanded actions.\u201d For this reason, under different positions, they are making \u201cinsertions\u201d in the public profiles on social networks of those who promote bullfighting activity; the response has been similar to that of some of the Yasun\u00edzate groups when they are confronted with evidence that they are occurring, that is, deletion and blocking. <\/span><\/div>\n

The most recent of these counter-publicity actions, which have received a flood of voices of support on social networks, was the recent "intervention" in the program for the election of the Queen of Quito (one of the main figures within the context of bullfights in the capital). Those who persist in this campaign affirm that the virtual and physical counter-publicity actions will continue, as some of their spokesmen say, with more "surprises." The participation of several provincial organizations has even been confirmed during the days of perhaps the largest bullfighting festival in the country.<\/span><\/div>\n
