The issue of the exploitation and over-exploitation of the Cerro "El Tablazo" in Santa Elena for many years, even today despite having been declared an Ecological Heritage Site, was put to the massive consideration of the community in a discussion that took place today in Santa Elena.<\/p>\n

The discussion, which was organized by Radio Para\u00edso, aimed to open a public space to discuss different points of view and options for the rescue of this iconic image of Santa Elena.<\/p>\n

This activity was initiated with the participation of the mayor of Santa Elena, Eng. Otto Vera P., who stated that several aspects must be considered before deciding whether to stop the exploitation of Tablazo, since it is from there that the raw material is taken for the construction of important works throughout the province such as coastal protection walls.
<\/span> Dionicio Gonzabay (former mayor of Santa Elena) meanwhile reminded the current mayor that the issue of the Tablazo was one of his campaign commitments and that today there are already legal tools and a legal framework, since it is currently declared a Protected Zone and that the nearly 200 workers should be relocated so they can maintain their jobs.

Enrique Rosales O., columnist for the newspaper El Universo, said that what is happening on the hill is a mockery, since the real problem is the industrial exploiters. He also insisted that the decision to stop the indiscriminate logging is a political decision.

Several other interventions were made, among which the importance of the historical aspects and that of Drino Nieto were highlighted, stating that the authorities must locate new tourist attractions for the province and that Cerro El Tablazo meets the requirements to become an interesting tourist destination.

Mayor Otto Vera concluded by reaffirming that an Open Assembly will be convened, where concrete measures will be adopted in accordance with the requirements of the citizens, which would basically be the location of other alternative sites for the extraction of the base stone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carlos Alc\u00ecvar, from the Municipality's PR department, stated that the Assembly would take place within a period of no more than 15 days.<\/span>
