One of the most important contributions to wildlife conservation in our country is now available in online (free) and print formats: the Red Book of Mammals of Ecuador; it contains information on endangered species, organized according to the degree of threat of each species.<\/p>\n

Ten years after the first publication, this second edition appears; it is a joint effort of more than 3 years between the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, the Foundation for the Study and Conservation of Mammals of Ecuador and the National Directorate of Biodiversity of the Ministry of the Environment.<\/p>\n

For this new edition, 404 species were evaluated, and the work was carried out by 50 scientists and technicians (4 times more than those who participated in the 1st edition) from more than 30 institutions in Ecuador, the USA, Canada and England. <\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/div>\n
 The data from the 2011 edition are not encouraging; they place Ecuador in 2nd place as the country with the highest number of endangered species on the planet, only behind Indonesia. The data reflect that one in four species of mammals in Ecuador is threatened and at risk of extinction and one in two has problems related to its conservation. <\/span><\/div>\n
