<\/p>\n

ONE OF THE AREAS WITH THE GREATEST BIODIVERSITY IN THE WORLD IS IN SERIOUS DANGER DUE TO THE INTENTION TO EXPAND THE OIL FRONTIER IN PASTAZA AND MORONA SANTIAGO
Ecuador has one of the 17 mega-diversity regions in the world. The Ecuadorian Amazon contains 101% of the plant species that exist on the planet and 181% of the bird species, and is a priority for biodiversity conservation.<\/p>\n

The south-central Amazon region, where the Ecuadorian state is currently holding a new round of bidding for oil blocks, like the rest of the Amazon, has lush vegetation typical of tropical rainforests.<\/p>\n

 The Amazonian rivers have washed a large amount of materials from the Andes, forming alluvial soils and terraces that are used for agriculture.<\/p>\n

As is well known, the Amazon ecosystem, especially its tropical rainforest, is considered one of the richest and most complex plant and animal habitats in the world, mainly due to the existence of a prolific flora and fauna together with extraordinary variations in macro and micro-habitats.<\/p>\n

Trees can be found that exceed 45 m in height. South-central Amazonia is one of the largest areas of continuous forest outside of protected areas, a parameter that is very important from the point of view of conservation biology to ensure ecosystem integrity.<\/p>\n

The tropical rainforests of Pastaza and Morona Santiago maintain more than 80% of their original vegetation cover. Due to its excellent state of conservation, this area is considered extremely vulnerable to socio-economic factors and, therefore, a critical priority for the conservation of biological diversity.<\/p>\n

The serious environmental impacts inherent in oil activities would irreversibly affect the biodiversity of these fragile ecosystems, as has already been the case in the northern part of the Amazon by all the companies that have operated there.<\/p>\n

This is the historic moment for Ecuadorians to reflect on what has happened in Ecuador with the oil policies applied, the bidding rounds carried out, the application of the right to prior consultation, the resistance struggles of indigenous nationalities and the political proposals that these Peoples have in the face of the State's proposal to perpetuate an activity that has proven to be very destructive for human beings and for ecosystems, not only in Ecuador but in the world.<\/p>\n
