We denounce to the Ecuadorian people that on Saturday, September 14, 18 ENAMI trucks, accompanied by soldiers and police, began to occupy the Intag area in the Province of Imbabura, where farmers and residents are actively resisting large-scale open-pit mining, which all Ecuadorian governments have attempted to impose since the 1990s. This military presence has occurred without any declaration of a state of siege or state of emergency and is being carried out against the will of peaceful communities that have put forward powerful reasons to oppose the destruction of their ways of life through mining exploitation.<\/div>\n

This military and police contingent suggests that the militarization of the area will become more acute, as is already happening in other places in the face of resistance from the population. A large propaganda campaign will surely be launched to accuse the local communities of rebellion and terrorism, with the aim of justifying the extractive and repressive policies of the Government.<\/p>\n

As the National Environmental Assembly, in the 2006 presidential elections, we presented to all presidential candidates our proposal to defend the environment, natural resources and the life of the people, which included a clear proposal to prioritize the popular and solidarity economy, community-ecological tourism and food sovereignty. Rafael Correa committed himself in writing to this proposal. Since then, we have seen how they try to impose open-pit and large-scale mining on us, the exploitation of Yasun\u00ed-ITT has been authorized, the doors have been opened for the massification of transgenic crops, deforestation of primary forests and destruction of the mangrove ecosystem, evictions of ancestral mangrove peoples, peoples of the sea and peasants.<\/p>\n

Within the framework of the Constituent Assembly, we promoted the adoption of environmental policies and over the years we have constantly denounced the policies of a government that has betrayed its own word and that tramples on the Constitution and the rights of communities and peoples.<\/p>\n

All within the framework of a formula that resists any analysis: getting out of poverty at the expense of nature, even though the model is no longer sustainable and is actually deepening poverty. Getting out of the primary, mining-exporting model by promoting large-scale mining.<\/p>\n

The military and police presence in Intag is intended to intimidate local organisations and impose the prior consultation mechanism, which is essential to legitimise and legalise mining operations in Intag, under military control. Things are getting worse in Intag: approximately 18 ENAMI vehicles, including soldiers and police, are trying to force their way into the area through Jun\u00edn and the community of Barcelona to begin environmental impact studies.
All Ecuadorians are hereby alerted to the threatening situation facing the population of Intag, due to the constant influx of police and military personnel with the aim of permanently intimidating the population.<\/p>\n

As the National Environmental Assembly we demand:<\/p>\n

1. The immediate withdrawal of military and police forces from the Intag area, respect for the integrity and life of the inhabitants, their right to resistance and the decision not to allow large-scale mining on their land.
2. The immediate presence in the area of civil society organizations, the Red Cross and human rights organizations, so that a report on the situation can be prepared for society.
3. Support for comrades who feel that their lives and those of their families are threatened, and who even have arrest warrants for defending their lives.<\/p>\n

We demand that his life be respected and that this persecution be stopped.<\/span><\/p>\n
