The Glorieta de Ballenita, a tourist icon of this community for more than 50 years and an important point for artisanal fishermen to determine where the “spot” of fish passes through, is now a subject of conflict due to the signing of the agreement on loan that was signed today between the Governor and the Mayor of Santa Elena by which the three floors of said construction would be used by the National Police, distributing them for complaint offices, apartments for the assigned personnel and a conference room on the upper part; with the consequent loss of what is undoubtedly one of the few attractions for national and international tourists who visit our community.

The dissatisfaction also had one of its causes due to the fact that this action has not been socialized and NO person from the community was present among the guests, despite the fact that the signing of the agreement took place in the heart of Ballenita.

Several members of the community said that while a greater police presence is necessary, they consider it a mistake to try to turn the roundabout into a police office or checkpoint.

Noticing that discontent was growing, the mayor of Sta. Elena, Eng. Otto Vera P., appeared to speak with those present, insisting that the project was not yet ready and that it was going to be socialized. Faced with this, the representatives of several institutions responded that he should analyze the options that come from the community, including: the use of one of the several abandoned lots that exist in that sector or the use of one of the side wings of the same roundabout; in order to avoid the loss of this icon of Ballenita.

The cards were laid (without any consultation) and the community responded and will remain vigilant in order not to lose this historical icon of the Ballenita resort.
