The issue of the exploitation and over-exploitation of the Cerro "El Tablazo" in Santa Elena for many years, even today despite having been declared an Ecological Heritage Site, was put to the massive consideration of the community in a discussion that took place today in Santa Elena.
The discussion, which was organized by Radio Paraíso, aimed to open a public space to discuss different points of view and options for the rescue of this iconic image of Santa Elena.
This activity was initiated with the participation of the mayor of Santa Elena, Eng. Otto Vera P., who stated that several aspects must be considered before deciding whether to stop the exploitation of Tablazo, since it is from there that the raw material is taken for the construction of important works throughout the province such as coastal protection walls.
Dionicio Gonzabay (former mayor of Santa Elena) meanwhile reminded the current mayor that the issue of the Tablazo was one of his campaign commitments and that today there are already legal tools and a legal framework, since it is currently declared a Protected Zone and that the nearly 200 workers should be relocated so they can maintain their jobs.
Enrique Rosales O., columnist for the newspaper El Universo, said that what is happening on the hill is a mockery, since the real problem is the industrial exploiters. He also insisted that the decision to stop the indiscriminate logging is a political decision.
