The Ministry of Health releases this important information for public health, regarding adulterated liquors that have caused dozens of deaths in Ecuador.

The list of liquors analyzed, with technical tests by the National Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Leopoldo Izquieta Pérez – INH, and which tested positive with high levels of methanol, is as follows:

– Tempting Strawberry Wine
– Tempting Peach Wine
– Fiesta Lemon Lime Liqueur (known as Papelito)
– San Roque Moscatel Wine
– Brandyla Light
– Z -One
– Three Marias Wine
– San Francisco Wine – The one from the tapita

Studies carried out by the INH determined the presence of methyl alcohol in both biological samples from patients and in samples of the seized product. This substance, when ingested, produces metabolites such as formic acid and formaldehyde, which are extremely toxic and cause blindness and even death. The lethal dose for humans varies between 60 and 250 cc.

The Ministry of Health urges the population to avoid buying or selling these adulterated liquors and recommends avoiding the consumption of any type of alcohol of dubious origin to protect their health and their lives.

We also request the support of the media and the community in general so that the list of adulterated liquors is widely disseminated to the population. We appeal to their responsibility to keep citizens informed on public health issues.
