The Undersecretariat of Fisheries Resources of MAGAP guarantees controls for compliance with the bans on the species red crab (Ucides occidentalis) and blue crab (Cardisoma crassum) and golden crab (Coryphaena hippurus), which will extend until September 15 and October 7 respectively, as indicated by the Director of Fisheries Control, Douglas Burgos Campusano.

The Fisheries Authority has inspected the coves in the provinces of Guayas, Santa Elena, El Oro, Esmeraldas and Manabí, and the markets in the case of Pichincha, and has seized 1,094 units of crabs, while 495 pounds and 5 units of dorado have been seized, said the official.

The Director of Fisheries Control added that SRP fisheries inspectors carry out controls with the help of members of the Environmental Police and the Navy, in restaurants, markets, sales points and landing ports.

He also said that the ban on the red crab (Ucides occidentalis) and blue crab (Cardisoma crassum) prohibits the capture, possession, processing, transportation and marketing of this resource throughout the country.

He stressed that the biological shutdown is established in order to protect the health of the consumer, because at this time the species molts and is not fit for consumption due to the secretion of high concentrations of calcium oxalate, a substance harmful to human health.

For the dorado resource (Coryphaena hippurus), no catches of less than 80 cm in length may be made, and during the ban, the use of J-type hooks, numbers 3, 4 and 5, is permitted, but the use of the fishing gear known as “fine line or doradero” is prohibited, and it clarifies that incidental fishing is permitted, but that inspectors must issue the respective certification.

The confiscated funds were donated to nursing homes.
