Press Release from the Under-Secretariat of Fisheries.
4 new agreements recently signed by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries, Eco. Staynley Vera Prieto, define management measures for the fishing sector, with which it is intended to achieve a sustainable and intergenerational development fishing policy. Below are the central axes on which the aforementioned agreements are based:
• Limitation of the entire fishing fleet, in order to safeguard bio-aquatic resources and establish the National Registry of Fishing Vessels, whose administration is in charge of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries Resources, in which all industrial and artisanal fishing vessels or any fishing classification that are operational will be registered, indicating their naval registration number, port of registry and fishing permit, granted by the competent Fisheries Authority.
• Prohibition of the use of screens as an aggregating device for catching fish
• Establish an ordinance for the use of Fish Aggregating Devices - FADs, in tuna purse seine vessels operating in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, under the Ecuadorian flag.
• Regulate the fishing activity of the so-called mother vessels. Longline mother vessels (sloops and boats), such as the fishing unit that tows up to 10 artisanal vessels
• The State is interested in incorporating regulations and arrangements in the field of fishing, which avoid overexploitation and excess fishing capacity, in order to ensure that the fishing effort is proportional to the production capacity of fishing resources and to their sustainable use.
These agreements were agreed upon by the actors involved in fishing activity together with the Undersecretary of Fisheries Resources, within the process of citizen participation, in several roundtable discussions held a few months ago. In this way, Ecuador will maintain its regional leadership and its recognized vocation in the exercise of responsible fishing, practiced permanently in relation to its bioaquatic resources.
