A new reintroduction of sea turtle hatchlings was carried out a few days ago by the team at the Valdivia Aquarium in the Montañita commune.
The turtles were successfully cared for in the rustic facilities of the Aquarium, and in coordination with the children of the Ecological Club and the Montañita Commune. These little loggerhead sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) were released in this community to raise awareness among residents and tourists about the protection and care of this species on the coasts of the Province of Santa Elena.
The release took place on October 15, 2011, on the Galápagos beach in the Montañita commune, in the presence of the community members of this sector, the children of the Ecological Club of the Aquarium and the technical staff of the Valdivia Aquarium.
These actions to protect sea turtles are part of the program that this institution started this year on the beaches of the coasts of the province of Santa Elena, mainly in the northern area where sea turtle nests have been reported.
Coordinated actions such as this one reflect the ongoing collaboration of the Valdivia Aquarium with the communities and reaffirm the commitment to protect and conserve marine resources.
Luis Reyes and Javier Suarez (Aquarium Technicians) also announce that in the next few days the Valdivia Aquarium Species Sponsorship Program will begin, aimed at "all people who want to support the care of these little animals in danger of extinction." The program will begin with the Sea Turtles. In the next few days we will give you more information on the subject, or you can contact the Valdivia Aquarium on Facebook. or visit the facilities at km 42 of the Spondylus Route.
