Vermiculture is an activity based on raising a domesticated species of worm (Eisenia foetida) as a working tool, obtaining as a result vermicompost or vermicompost, meat and worm flour.

Vermiculture can be applied in various areas, mainly in:

Domestic vermiculture is practiced by people with a sense of responsibility towards the environment who recycle their household, kitchen and garden waste.
BENEFITS:

Among the benefits of vermiculture at the local level we can mention:
1. It allows recycling of organic waste from each family unit up to 60%.
2. It is an activity with a very low initiation cost.
3. It can be developed at the family level.
4. As a whole, cities reduce the costs of transporting waste to its final disposal site (landfills, dumps, etc.).
5. Children grow up understanding and practicing the recycling process.
6. The need to purchase chemical nutrients such as fertilizers for gardens and orchards is eliminated.
7. It enables the creation of extra income by selling humus as a final product.
For this reason, the Ballenita Sí Online Magazine, with the support of the La Ruta del Son Cultural Center, will hold 2 Vermiculture workshops, where participants will be trained to know how to transform household waste (kitchen and garden) or from the orchard into high-quality Organic Fertilizer.

These workshops will be held on Saturday, June 30, at the La Ruta del Son Cultural Center - Virgilio Drouet Street and Guayaquil Avenue - next to the Municipal Tourism Office in Santa Elena.
There will be 2 time slots available: 9:30 am and 3:30 pm. Each of the workshops will last 3 hours and participants will learn: Construction and necessary equipment; Management and Production Techniques and Applications of Humus.
The registration fee is 10 USD for students and 15 USD for the general public. This fee includes the workshop + manual + worm breeding stock (so that participants can start their own production) and 1 kg of high-quality humus.
