MANTA, ECUADOR.- Carlos Ahumada Quezada, head of the Satellite Monitoring Center of the National Fisheries Service of the Government of Chile, trains officials from the Undersecretariat of Fisheries Resources (SRP) who work on the implementation of this system.
The Monitoring System in Chile has been operating since 2000, during which time it has been possible to comprehensively monitor the operation of the industrial fleet of more than 200 ships and their authorized areas.
Satellite monitoring of fishing vessels in Chile bases its functionality on the ability to transmit to land - via satellite - the location at sea of a fishing vessel, identifying its geographic position, date, time, course, associated speed and the possibility of issuing reports in systems where they are organized, stored to produce information or, if necessary, sanctions.
The expert said that “thanks to this system, we have been able to establish joint work with the Navy of our country and we have controlled the way in which resources are extracted and the sustainability of marine species, thanks to the control that is carried out.”
Verónica Mora, coordinator of the SRP Satellite Monitoring Center, said that the objective is to record the activity of fishing vessels nationwide, to identify the permitted fishing areas and take corrective action against those who violate the law (invasion of the reserve mile and the eight-mile limit).
He added that the aim is to achieve greater safety for fishermen while they carry out their work and to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity.
The head of the Monitoring Centre in Chile believes that the installation of monitoring in Ecuador for artisanal vessels is a good idea, as this shows the fisheries administration's commitment to ensuring the safety of fishermen on the high seas.
Among the topics covered in the training are the presentation and analysis of fisheries, use of nautical charts, reports and functionality of the system in Chile, recognition of the SRP Monitoring System, among others.
In Ecuador there are other Satellite Monitoring Systems located in Machalilla, Galapagos and Guayaquil
