The Valdivia Aquarium (Valdivia District, Santa Elena Province, Ecuador) is an institution that has specialized for more than 15 years in the management and rehabilitation of marine fauna through an area intended to receive, treat, recover and release hundreds of animals, mainly sea turtles, birds and marine mammals from our Ecuadorian coast.
Since 2012, the program called “Sponsor a Turtle and Carry It in Your Heart” has been carried out, aimed at individuals, educational institutions, state or private companies. This program seeks to promote the protection of the various species of sea turtles that are threatened, integrating children, young people and adults in interactive events, aimed at the conservation of these species that have survived for more than 110 million years, but are currently on the verge of extinction and need our understanding and support for their survival.
For those who have been captivated by the spawning of a sea turtle, it is perhaps easier to understand the importance of caring for nature and the animals that live there. It can be a process that takes many hours from the time this marine species reaches the sand and prepares what will serve as a shelter for its eggs, but it is pleasant and surprising to witness this event that invites those who observe it to be more cautious with the environment and with the wide biodiversity present.
The symbolic adoption of a specimen (juvenile or adult) will allow the financing and development of conservation projects and/or theses that are carried out at the Valdivia Aquarium, and in the coastal areas of the Spondylus Route, and will give you a unique opportunity as an Adoptive Godfather, to integrate into community work, as well as other evaluation activities, monitoring, talks and environmental events organized by the institution.
In the case of Corporate Adoptions, the program translates into significant benefits for your company, and allows you to integrate your Social Responsibility work in favor of environmental protection.
The idea is to strengthen the work that has been carried out since the Valdivia Aquarium was created. “Sponsor a Turtle and carry it in your heart” aims to get closer to the marine populations present in our country. It is estimated that 5 of the 7 types of turtles existing on the planet live in Ecuadorian waters.
There are three plans to join the network of Adoptive Sponsors and Corporate Adoptions, with the contribution to be invested in rescue and conservation programs, research and workshops.
“We hope to have the support of many, because this is a problem that will affect us all in the long run. Hopefully, just as this generation has been able to observe these specimens, future generations will be able to do so, and the program is committed to that, to preventing the continued disappearance of this and other species,” says Luis Reyes, Director of the Valdivia Aquarium.
