Punta Ayampe Estate |
Between the lush green hills and sandy beaches of the Spondylus Route, Ayampe is a hidden gem of Ecuador's Pacific.
Located very close to the pristine Machalilla National Park, between Puerto López and Montañita, Ayampe is an excellent place to relax and enjoy the sun, scuba diving, snorkeling (with more islets per unit area than any other coastal area in Ecuador), surfing and whale watching, without the exploitation of other destinations on the coast.
From June to September, there are whale watching tours leaving from Ayampe ($25 – $35).
Machalilla National Park, with its unique ecosystem and endemic plant and animal species, is just a few kilometers from Ayampe. Tours are available that include whale watching or snorkeling or a guided hike of the national park. Not to be missed is the archaeological museum that details the history of the area's natural features and native cultures.
Surfing is another of Ayampe's attractions, due to its waves and uncrowded beaches. Here it is possible to rent surfboards and take lessons with local guides.
Inland, however, the hills and the Ayampe River are a must-see, to enjoy the tranquility and the abundant flora and fauna. All this with the support of local guides and can be done by mule or horse.
The rainy season is usually from December to May. The humpback whale flow is from June to September, so hotel and tour prices increase during those months.
How to get there and leave
