One of the adventure activities that can be enjoyed all year round, regardless of whether it is sunny or not, on the Ruta del Sol or Ruta del Spondylus, is paragliding; since the only reasons that can prevent flying are too much or too little wind, conditions that rarely occur.
Jorge Mora, owner of Fly Costa, is one of the instructors who operate flights in San Pedro and Puerto López. He defines it as “a paraglider is a flexible wing that flies.” He explains that on the coast of Ecuador, people usually look for a high point on the coast, since the wind current that enters the land from the sea, when it hits the mountain, is what makes the paraglider rise and stay in flight. He says that all the points where there are runways on the Ecuadorian coast are generally quite similar, with certain differences only relating to air humidity.
Jorge has been practicing this sport for eleven years. He is also a certified instructor and has been offering tandem or two-seater flights in San Pedro, Santa Elena for two years (that is, flights led by a guide, where the tourist enjoys the flight without needing to know the technique of flying a paraglider). In San Pedro, the flights offered to tourists last an average of 15 minutes and cover the mountainous part of this sector of the coastal profile, but Jorge explains that under ideal wind conditions, it is possible to fly all day without stopping.
The teams are given by level and weight and it is an ideal place because the track is very wide which allows for small beginner mistakes, they cost 350 dollars for 15 solo flights + 2 tandem flights + 5 hours of theory, and for level 2 it is 60 hours, and you can continue going up for competitions.
In San Pedro, courses are also offered to fly without the assistance of a guide. The basic level consists of 15 solo flights + 2 tandem flights + 5 hours of theory, with an average cost of 350 USD. A more advanced level, with which the practitioner is qualified to fly between mountains and consists of 60 hours, is offered until reaching another level where the person is prepared for competitions. All courses given in San Pedro or Puerto López are valid to obtain the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) license.
In Ecuador there are 3 places that grant FAI licenses, to which applicants are referred after instructors certify that they have received the course. In our country the license costs 70 dollars the first time and for subsequent renewals the value is lower.
