In recent years, plastic waste has increased alarmingly due to the consumption of products in disposable packaging. Although there are at least 50 types of plastics, there are only programs to recycle a few of these, mainly PET, and it is estimated that only 1/5 of what is produced is collected.
Ironically, recycling plastic is less profitable than producing it, which is why companies do not promote it and only produce more waste.
This is why it is essential to reduce the amount of plastic we consume.
Some of the ideas collected in various forums are presented below:
- Reuse the plastic bags you already have.
- Use the well-known and traditional “shopping bags” instead of asking for bags for everything.
- Bring your own bags to the supermarket: cloth, woven, wicker, your backpack or satchel, or even plastic.
- Prefer places that guarantee that plastic bags are biodegradable.
- Prefer fresh products packaged in paper.
- Choose products packaged in larger quantities rather than individually packaged; prefer large bottles (for oil, shampoo, etc.) instead of small ones.
- When buying clothes, choose those whose main composition is natural fibers (cotton, linen, cellulose, wool, alpaca, angora, etc.).
- Choose glass over plastic when purchasing and storing food (it preserves natural flavors and does not impregnate food with cancerous residues).
- Say NO to disposable plates, glasses and cutlery… (Not even plastic and even worse polystyrene).
- If you buy bottled water, reuse the bottles, rinse them and refill them at home. Prefer the use of a water bottle.
- Although most returnable presentations have disappeared in soft drinks, some still exist, prefer those with returnable bottles.
