Special issue of the week on “Citizen Security”.

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) presented on International Safer Internet Day 2010 a series of basic guidelines to stay safe from the risks of using social networks; as a summary, they are the following:

1. Pay attention when posting or uploading material: Pay special attention to what images, videos and information you choose to post. Do not post private information.

2. Choose your friends carefully: Unless it's a public profile, don't accept friend requests from people you don't know. Check your contacts.

3. Protect your work environment and do not jeopardize your reputation:
Use your personal email address as your registration email (not your company email). Be careful how you represent your company or organization. Don't mix work contacts and friends.
Do not let anyone see your profile or personal information without permission

4. Protect your mobile phone and the information stored on it. Do not leave your cell phone unattended. Do not save your password on your cell phone.
Use the security features on your phone. Be careful what you post about other people.

5. Get informed: Read carefully and from beginning to end the privacy policy and the conditions and terms of use of the social network you choose.

6. Protect yourself with privacy settings: Use options designed to protect your privacy (check who can see your photos, who can contact you, and who can add comments). Report immediately if your phone is stolen.
Be careful when using your cell phone and be aware of where you leave it.

7. Disable location-based services when you are not using them.
