 Earth Hour has already begun in some cities around the world and will continue to change time zones over the next few hours. Lesotho, Nigeria, and South Africa are currently in darkness joining in this global call. More than 4,000 cities in 131 countries around the world are expected to join in the 2011 edition.

By turning off non-essential lights for one hour – Earth Hour – we will join millions of people around the world in their commitment to fight climate change and send a message to officials that the time to act is now.

Today, March 26 at 8:30 p.m. local time, Earth Hour will cascade across the globe, from one time zone to another—uniting the planet in a single, simple call to action.

In our country, Quito and Guayaquil will participate as cities in this initiative. In Quito, some sites in the Historic Center will be disconnected synchronously, such as the churches of La Concepción and El Sagrario, as well as the Carondelet Palace and the Plaza Grande. Meanwhile, in Guayaquil, starting at 7:30 p.m., an artistic event will be held in the Plaza de El Fortín, next to Las Peñas, where followers of this campaign will gather by candlelight to experience the blackout. There will be performances by capoeira groups, drummers, and stilt walkers. Public buildings in the province of Guayas will also keep their lights off.

Since its creation three years ago by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour has captured the world's imagination and become a global phenomenon. Nearly one billion people participated in Earth Hour 2009 – involving 4,100 cities in 87 countries on seven continents.

Some iconic places around the world that will be dark in the following hours are:
* The Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, Broadway theater marquees, United Nations Headquarters in New York
* The National Cathedral in Washington DC
* The Great Pyramids of Giza
* The Acropolis and the Parthenon in Athens
* St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican
* Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in London
* The Elysees Palace and the Eiffel Tower in Paris
* The Symphony of Lights in Hong Kong
* The Sydney Opera House
* The Statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro
