The work of fishing vessels carried out on the high seas will be verified in order to apply the prohibition of use. of light screens as a mechanism for capturing fishery resources. This verification will be carried out by theThe National Fisheries Institute (INP) and the Undersecretariat of Fisheries Resources of MAGAP, this prohibition is stipulated in the Ministerial Agreement 406 prohibiting its use.
Douglas Burgos C. (The Directorate of Fisheries Control indicated that the verifications will begin this November 26 on vessels still using equipment or energy generating systems for the artificial production of light, which are used as a fish segregation mechanism.
As an example, he mentioned what will happen in Crucita (Manabí), where it will take place on the 26th and 27th, coinciding with the period known as dark, that is, the lunar phase in which fishermen carry out their work at sea; for the province of Santa Elena this will occur on the 28th and 29th of November.
This process will allow INP and SRP technicians to verify the species and sizes captured as part of the use of this extraction mechanism.
Burgos concluded by indicating that the purpose of these controls is to ensure that the measures for responsible management of fishing resources are complied with, and thus ensure the sustainability of fish populations and fishing in the long term.
