A claim that has been made for more than 15 years by the inhabitants of Valdivia due, according to them, to the problems suffered by the constant environmental contamination caused by the waste dumped by the INDUVAL and IMPORVA sardine canning factories.C   "First it was the river that was contaminated by the factory waste, and now they plan to dump it into the sea," said Manuel Reyes.

Last Tuesday, April 10, the Commune again called for the presence of various provincial authorities to try to resolve this problem they called "INDUVAL Pollution"; none of the authorities (despite having confirmed their presence, according to the organizers) showed up.

For this reason, in the afternoon, the assembly began without the invited authorities. Among the empty chairs were those of the Governor of Santa Elena (Paul Soto); the Director of the National Risk Secretariat (Luis Garcia Gutierrez); the Captain of the Port of Salinas (Enrique Buchelli); the Mayor of Santa Elena (Otto Vera); the Director of the Environment (Daniel Castillo); among others.

The meeting was attended by the Children's Ecological Club who presented a series of posters alluding to the pollution generated by the company. This community activity continued and in the absence of the authorities, which was understood as a "lack of interest", and feeling "mocked by the authorities who promised to be at the Communal Assembly to resolve the issue of pollution caused by the Induval company", they proceeded at 7 p.m. to close the road (Ruta del Spondylus) with stones and sticks. The closure lasted two hours.
After the commune had carried out this decision, a delegate from the Ministry of the Interior arrived to calm the crowd, which had become enraged by the mockery. The Political Chief reached an agreement with the commune to hold another meeting on Friday at 3 p.m., in which the authorities would be present. In this way, a new strike was avoided, which was planned to continue on a daily basis until they were heard, as the organizers had stated.
The Valdivia Commune has been taking action for several years to prevent the INDUVAL company from continuing to operate, and promises from the authorities have come and gone. Currently, according to Pedro Borbor (President of the commune), they are operating without an environmental license, so - he continues - if the control authorities wanted to enforce the law, they should IMMEDIATELY close the company.

Similarly, only in the last year, 2 artistic events have been held.things and public culturalcos to call the authorities to achieve with the laws in the case INDUVAL.
