Hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered on May 25 in hundreds of cities in around 40 countries around the world to show their rejection of genetically modified foods and their main exponent: the multinational Monsanto; in a protest called for at a global level by the Occupy Monsanto movement.

The demand for the right to know what is being consumed in food was one of the main pillars of the demonstration. This is the case in Ecuador, where the President of the Republic Rafael Correa has raised the possibility of opening the country to genetically modified crops. However, the same state has shown that it is either lacking interest or lacks the capacity to even enforce the minimum legislation that requires labelling of products containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that are currently sold in markets and supermarkets in the country, bypassing the legal norm.

The following are some of the images that demonstrate the global discontent regarding GMOs.
