A group of activists, artists and volunteers, began last weekend in Ballenita the first of several murals that will be painted on the walls of the entrances to the beach of this resort, the first of the Ruta del Sol or Spondylus route, and the closest to the provincial capital.

The central theme of this proposal is the issue of solid waste on the beach. "The idea is to have an impact on the people who come to enjoy the beach, so that when they leave they remember that the trash they may have generated is their responsibility; and that they do not leave it abandoned," said Mica Morales, one of the young activists who participated in this intervention.

Guayaquil artist Xavier Blum and Patricia Artycultura (frequent visitors to Ballenita and members of the Arte Vital collective) collaborated in providing guidelines for the work that the volunteers would carry out. Some of the owners of the surrounding businesses also actively participated, confident that this action will help keep the beach cleaner and create a pleasant environment that complements the tourist's visit.

The first sector that was chosen to be intervened was one of the descents to the beach in Ballenita (intersection of the road to La Libertad, coming from the north), but the idea is to reproduce it in as many spaces as possible, especially on those beaches with a large influx of tourists.

However, it is worth remembering that according to the current Constitution, municipalities are responsible for the care of the beaches, so the community in general of Ballenita hopes that the requests made to the Municipality of Santa Elena, regarding the issue of beach cleaning, will be fulfilled in the short term, encouraged by these same citizen actions.

Ana del Pezo, one of the athletes who frequents this beach in the afternoons, expressed her satisfaction that the collective action of citizens has resulted in this type of example for the good of the beaches that we all enjoy.
